HOW TO START LEARNING FRENCH ON YOUR OWN
To learn French, is it all in the brain?
It’s in the guts
Do you remember how you feel when something important happens in your life? It could be an accident or could be something planned. If it’s a sad event, it could make you sick. It hurts in your guts. You want to vomit.
If the opposite happens, if it’s a very happy event, you feel excited. You want to jump because you also feel it in your guts.
To learn a language is physical
And these events, you will remember them in detail forever. Your whole body was involved, from your brain to your guts and back and forth. It’s crazy. You can feel the flow of energy everywhere. This post will give you details on how to start learning French on your own. But you can also check my course info right HERE
What happens when you study?
However, the information you receive generally stays there in the brain.
You just open the drawer, put some stuff in there. You hope it will stay there but it’s volatile and if it entered through one ear, it will get out through the other one very fast. Then, you could feel frustrated, bored. It could be painful. You want to quit.
But there is a solution.
In order to retain the information more efficiently, a combination of things must occur.
You first have to enjoy.
You also have to
take the information with your entire body.
It has to leave your brain, visit your guts and come back. And when you
share that produced energy,
it’s even more powerful.
Feeling is learning
On its way down from the brain, the info passes by the heart. If you happen to love the info, that info will be pushed down further to the guts. If you hate it, it Will also reach the guts. But let’s say for the sake of it that if you have a passion for the subject, it will be easier to remember.
You LEARN.
Even if you are indifferent, if you find a way, even artificially, to push it down, you will feel it in your guts and you will remember.
What can you do to send the information into your guts when the event is not exceptional?
Well, you have to push it down forcefully, by using your entire body, all your senses if possible.
I BELIEVE THAT IN ORDER TO LEARN BETTER, COMFORT AND SELF-CONFIDENCE ARE ESSENTIAL, THAT IS WHY IN ALL MY COURSES I SHOW YOU THESE LETTERS THAT BOTHER YOU FROM BEING THERE WHILE THEY ARE NOT PRONOUNCED. THAT IS ALSO WHY I SIMPLY ASK YOU TO IMITATE ME OVER AND OVER USING A LANGUAGE THAT IS CONTRACTED SO THAT YOU WILL FEEL EMPOWERED WHEN THE TIME COMES FOR YOU TO COMMUNICATE WITH THE FRENCH.
When you receive a lecture,
the information gets into your ear and sometimes into your eyes. It’s all up there. It reaches the brain directly. If you could add to it the use of the movement, it’s like taking advantage of your sense of touch. The more senses you use to register the information, the better you will remember it.
Go to Paris and pass by a bakery in the early morning,
you will never forget the word baguette or even pain, le pain, the bread. You will rarely experience the sense of smell to learn something but in this case, your learning experience is felt deeply all the way in your guts. The information will stick.
Separate the tasks
Write and speak – Do and make
The student studies with his or her brain and expresses himself or herself through writing and speaking. The apprentice learns with his or her guts and expresses himself or herself through doing and making. When you make something, more of your body is physically involved than when you are talking.
You’ll divide to reign
To make sure it works, we have to use the senses but separate the tasks. We prefer to use them separately and pile them up as we go. It gives them more chances to be worked out. This process helps the body remember physically and eventually intellectually. In my system, instead of lines and words to try to remember, I use colors to attract your attention to a mechanical task instead of to the meaning of the words. I divert the attention to work physically instead of intellectually. That is why you learn better.
Reenforce the weakest
I am a visual person
If I work with my senses of hearing and sight at the same time and I am a visual person, which sense do you think will work most? And the other one will stay uneducated. That is why we cannot remember fully.
Rethink the experience
It’s another way of doing, another way of thinking about the learning experience. That is why I ask everyone who is intermediate or advanced in French to restart at the beginning. For them, of course, it goes extremely fast, but they have to do it. This is how to speak French fluently.
Delay thinking
In other exercises, I challenge you through the speed of delivery so that you don’t have time to think. By absorbing the information through your skin, the whole body is involved, all your senses. As your muscles are working hard, you stop thinking.
You study in the brain – You learn in your guts
Creating automatisms
Creating automatisms helps us stay down in the guts. Then it can go to the brain. It’s not a problem. We have open the gate. If I challenge you, it’s not intellectually. I’m a master. I challenge you physically. A language is physical. There are sounds you are not used to. Expressions you didn’t know. There are background noises that get in your way of hearing properly. I make you practice on dialogs recorded in their natural environment so you are not in shock when the real world is surrounding you. Instead, you will feel empowered.
Experience reality
Different people have different tones of voice. A panaché of people to work with is a good practice. I have recorded many French people and we work with them. Then when you are trained, you can enjoy my exercises on film excerpts. In general, actors speak fast. It might confuse students. Not you. That’s when the training will pay off.
Free workshop
Pre-registration
There will be a four-day free workshop. I also added a fifth day free of charge, but it’s only for you if you decide to join the group of French Whisperers. I will announce the event later but you can already pre-register for free to let me know that you are interested and that I can send you an email to let you know. It’s HERE
Learn a must-have tool that every French student should master
I will give you a tool to work with each day until you master it at the end of the week.
Feel free and empowered
When we shoot a film for example, at the end of the last day, we say: It’s a wrap. For you, it will be a new beginning. You will feel freer to enjoy your new language like you lifted a load off your shoulders.
The power of breathing
Establish the connection
There is something good coming from finding the right balance between the two brains. The one in our heads and the one in our guts. If we can establish the connection, we learn better. When I stop breathing, I am stuck. I can’t remember things. If I am paralyzed on stage, for example, that’s when I start having problems remembering my lines. At that moment, if I take a big breath, the line comes back. Everything goes back to normal.
Change position
All that to say that being seated all day long to receive an education at school doesn’t help children to breathe and remember. Going outside at recess is barely enough. May I suggest something? Have you seen these office desks that can be set in two different positions, one if I want to sit down, the other one in the standing position? Couldn’t they make a version for the school?
