GUIDE TO LEARNING FRENCH
My thoughts go to the thousands of families who still don’t have the internet when teaching online has been the best solution or the only solution.
With that said, It has been an experience that could be used to make progress and find a very satisfying hybrid solution that could perdure, whether we are in a pandemic situation or not.
With COVID, we have had to use the internet to teach. Did we perform well? Did we use all the possibilities? Probably not. We were not prepared and it takes time to imagine how we could use the tools, what their potential could be, not counting how many more tools are created each day. It has been hard for many who are still not very comfortable showing their face on camera.
There are lots of advantages of in-person teaching like the last question asked by the students in the hallway, the walking between classes, the physical connection.
Could we take advantage of this painful experience and quite a scary time to reflect on the way we teach? Let’s start with teaching French. Is the traditional way of learning French at school satisfying and could it be improved? Covid has forced us to consider another form of teaching a class. Was the form really changed because we were online? Or are we still teaching the same way using different media?

1. Remember the entire quote in the Crown, season 3, episode 6?
“We learn through imitation. Like anything in life, if we pretend we’re something long enough, we may just become it.” If you want to be a master at speaking French, copy the masters, which means the French. Not a recorded script. A French person talking freely with another person.
The ideal situation that I had imagined for myself in New York was to have my coach with me who would repeat to me everything that we would hear on the street, exactly the way it was said. I would repeat and get the translation. This guide to learning French will help you choose the right French classes for you or the best learn French website.
So you know what you can ask your French teacher. He can invite a colleague or a friend to come to class and speak in French in front of you for a couple of minutes. You will have your goal in your ear before the French lesson.
2. We traditionally teach or learn through lecturing.
I used the word ‘learn’ but in another post, I discuss what is to learn and what is to study. So, to be more exact, we teach and study mostly through lecturing.
Now, let’s talk about languages. What is a language for? What do I want my students to achieve first? Do I really want to lecture them or do I want to show them? Do I want to strictly teach them the language or do I want to teach them culture as well?

3. A guide to learning French is for everyone who wants to learn French.
I BELIEVE THAT IN ORDER TO LEARN BETTER, COMFORT AND SELF-CONFIDENCE ARE ESSENTIAL, THAT IS WHY IN ALL MY COURSES I SHOW YOU THESE LETTERS THAT BOTHER YOU FROM BEING THERE WHILE THEY ARE NOT PRONOUNCED. THAT IS ALSO WHY I SIMPLY ASK YOU TO IMITATE ME OVER AND OVER USING A LANGUAGE THAT IS CONTRACTED SO THAT YOU WILL FEEL EMPOWERED WHEN THE TIME COMES FOR YOU TO COMMUNICATE WITH THE FRENCH.
No French people have ever learned grammar, syntax before they were able to speak fluently.
No English-speaking person has ever studied the language before they were able to speak it.
In terms of school, What do we do in school? What does it mean to study? What does it mean to learn?
If you are like me, I liked to have a list of verbs like to speak, spoke, spoken, in front of me.
We cannot avoid that and that is why the best French courses should include a French conjugation book that every French beginner should have in his bag. The Bescherelle is like a dictionary for verbs.
I really liked to have that one.
4. The student studies and the apprentice learns. What does that mean?
Who is taking care of a student? A teacher. Who is taking care of an apprentice? A master.
If you have a different title, you cannot just do the same. There is a reason why we have two different words.
Once in my English class came a British teacher for a month or two. He was a master at speaking English but he was lecturing. It was a missed opportunity for me. This guide to learning French will clarify this for you
You will learn French better from a master, by showing you what to do, instead of giving you a lecture.
5. Two methods of learning
A teacher teaches through lectures mostly. A master forms an apprentice through showing mostly. Then the apprentice imitates and learns. If a student doesn’t learn, just memorizes to pass the exam, when does he really learn? When he gets a job. Then he is shown what to do. So you leave school at different stages to become an apprentice: In high school, after two or 4 years in college, or later. As long as you are in college, you don’t master things even if you receive a master’s degree. Because only an apprentice can become a master.

Is time important for you?
….If you typed ‘learn French fast, you are probably not a student. Students know that it will request time. You are caught and you need to learn fast because you have been hired by a French company or you have planned a trip to France. Will you experience the best if you don’t know anything about the language? Because you might be questioning your ability to speak french, realizing it will be much more fun if you can speak French a bit before you go. Most of the apps you can find on your phone will probably be useless when you land there. They just make you feel good before you take off, and that’s it. Well, if you are leaving in two weeks, it’s a little late, but it’s not without a solution…
What is your goal?
…. The important question to ask yourself is: What am I learning French for? If I answer that question, I will be able to decide how I want to learn it. Most people will join a class. We are all consumers and we don’t really question enough. We enroll in a course online without further questioning. That’s where we lose a lot of time. Because most of the known programs will not help you speak and also understand and be understood. Why? Because most of them have not been created by the French. And even If the creators were actually French, they might have been intellectuals whose interest or focus is mainly to write. But you want to speak French.
The French are not the only ones who know the French language but they are the only ones who have been speaking it since birth…

We chose to be selective
….To master the French conjugation online, I propose that you start with the easy part, but not only the easy part. You want to practice the verbs that are most used. Actually, they are the same in all languages. So which verbs, like French verbs, are the most used?
We are going to repeat them over and over. if you have followed me through these live events, you might remember I mentioned several times the quote in ‘the Crown’ that says: we learn through imitation. Right?
At the condition that what we repeat is not wrong. Repeating a million times something that is wrong will not make it right at the end…
